Recommendation - Embric of Wulfhammer's Castle. Also random Waker Screen

Embric of Wulfhammer's Castle is a free open-world RPG Maker 2003 game by Saint Bomber. It was originally released in 2010, but an enhanced version of the game came out this year. I had never gotten to the end of the original, so I revisited it and was pleasantly surprised.

Now, I still have yet to reach the game's "true" ending (there are literally dozens of them), but it's become just about one of my favorite RPGs ever. That isn't hyperbole; I mean it. The game puts you in the shoes of the Duchess of Elstwhere, a noblewoman arranged to marry the adventuring hero Embric of Wulfhammer. Problem is, Embric's left his castle to raid some dungeons and his whereabouts are unknown. In the meantime, the Duchess explores Castle Wulfhammer and the surrounding land and starts to be acquainted with the local populace. Things go downhill from there.

The game places an uncommon emphasis on the relationships between the Duchess and the other characters - there's a little bit of combat, but it's saved until the very end.  The characters are truly memorable, and there are dozens of individual story arcs that can be completed in any order yet interact with each other in complex ways.

On top of that, the game's writing is hilarious. Even to say that the writing's hilarious is an understatement - this is one of the best written comedic games that I have played, ever. If you're not familiar with tabletop RPG games like Dungeons and Dragons, some of the gags will be lost on you, but if you're the sort of person who'd read this blog, that probably won't be a problem. All in all,The game's freaking brilliant.

As a warning, though, the game's very NSFW. The Duchess finds herself in a series of sexual encounters with just about every other principal female character in the game. Wulfhammer is by no means pornographic, but it's pretty raunchy. This shouldn't deter you, but I don't want any of you to play this, find your character being molested by a mermaid, exclaim "Ye gods! I thought this was a family-friendly RPG! I do declare, what is this dirty, dirty game that Alex is making me play?", and throw your computer out of the window because, damn, computers are expensive.

Download Embric of Wulfhammer's Castle at (and be sure to download the deluxe edition).

EDIT: Gyaaaah I finally got to the actual ending. Consider my recommendation as being stronger than it was previously.

On a totally unrelated note, I took a pretty screenshot of my game, Waker, that I tried to make into my cover picture on Facebook, but Facebook .jpg-ified it and it looked terrible. So I'm posting it here instead.

  1. I need technical help with this game. I've been playing fine on Windows 10 for something like 15 hours of gameplay. I would shut my laptop without exiting the game, and didn't encounter any problems. The last time I did so, the Duchess wouldn't change any outfits. I'd click on a new outfit (say, the cocktail dress), it would register as worn in the menu, but she didn't appear to be wearing it. Other characters don't react to the outfit, either, which is a huge problem if I want to wear Black Armor or seduce Louni with the Outlaw Bustier. I reset my computer and re-downloaded the game, but all my old save files were kept (how I don't know) and the problem is still there. My game is un-playable.

    1. I wish I could help you! Saint Bomber was the creator of the game, but both he and the game's website seem to have vanished.
It's been a while since I've played Wulfhammer, but I would maybe try triggering events that change the Duchess' outfit outside of the menu (like when she falls down a well and is stripped to her underwear) and see if that fixes it? Sorry to hear you're having issues.
